Inquiries are always welcome from motivated, collaborative individuals who have a passion for science. We provide a team-oriented, rigorous environment, a laser-like focus (hilarious microscopy pun intended) on your career goals, leading-edge scientific questions and techniques, and flexible funding to pursue creative ideas. We are excited to have as our new home the highly collaborative, well-resourced, and growing Department of Cell, Developmental, & Integrative Biology in the rapidly expanding, basic science-driven UAB Heersink School of Medicine, located in the diverse, progressive, affordable, and fun city of Birmingham, with easy access to the beautiful outdoors. Please reach out to Dr. Saxena for further information.

Postdoctoral Positions:
Multiple postdoctoral positions are available. Please email the following to Dr. Saxena:

  • CV

  • List of at least three references

  • A short description of:

  1. your general research interests.

  2. why you'd like to work with us in particular.

  3. what accomplishments you're most proud of/what makes you stand out as a candidate.

  4. anything else you’d like to share.

Experience with zebrafish, high-resolution microscopy, and/or quantitative developmental/cell biology is helpful but not required. Those things can be taught, and our group is great at teaching them. We're far more interested in your motivations, goals, ideas, interests, and overall potential. Please note that generic applications (i.e., not providing the information requested above) will not receive consideration.

Current UAB Graduate & MSTP Students: Multiple rotation spots are available. Please email Dr. Saxena for details.

Prospective Graduate Students:
General inquiries (e.g., about the program, if our lab will have openings, etc.) are welcome, but please include details about what you’re interested in and why you'd like to potentially work with us. Generic/mass emails are not likely to receive a response. Information about the GBS graduate program can be found here.

Undergraduate Students:
We look for enthusiasm, maturity, reliability, and a willingness to work as part of a team. For project-based positions, we ask for a minimum of 12 hours/week. All current openings are filled, but you are welcome to email Dr. Saxena about future opportunities.

Outreach

We take seriously our commitment to the public good and are appreciative of the taxpayer-based funding that makes our research possible. As a postdoc at Caltech (ages ago!), Dr. Saxena organized and led outreach efforts such as 'Lab Tours' for the general public at several levels -- middle & high school students from disadvantaged communities, Caltech undergrads, local philanthropists, and many others. We significantly expanded that tradition of community involvement in the Saxena Lab, where we have an effective (and really fun!) workflow for demonstrating in vivo cell and developmental biology to visitors. Dr. Saxena also founded a growing “Science on the Move” outreach program that brings in vivo biology directly into underserved communities, reducing barriers and reaching kids in environments (parks, schools, etc.) where they are comfortable. Please contact us to set up a visit to our lab or request that we come out to your school or neighborhood organization.

Donate

If you'd like to support our efforts investigating stem cell and cancer behavior in vivo, please contact Dr. Saxena for information about how to route a donation via UAB. Resulting publications will acknowledge all sources of funding.

Thanks for your interest in our work!
